Tajweed is the set of rules that govern exactly how each letter of the Holy Quran is pronounced — where it is produced in the mouth and throat (Makharij), how long certain sounds are held (Madd), and the distinct qualities that separate one Arabic letter from another that looks similar on the page (Sifaat). These are not arbitrary academic rules invented centuries after the Quran was revealed.
